It’s Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing week in D.C.!
Are you ready to learn how Elena Kagan would vote on controversial cases that come before the Supreme Court? Too bad! SCOTUS being the slow-moving monstrosity that it is, we should have a general idea five years down the line. Are you emotionally prepared to get a sense of who Ms. Kagan actually is? Too bad again! She will spend most of her time working against the possibility of giving a definite answer, for fear that GOP Senators will grandstand on the minutest of slip-ups.
So what can you expect? Platitudes; long shots of proud family members in the gallery; long, boring speeches from both sides of the aisle, but especially Democrats; and deflection, deflection, deflection. In regards to the latter activity, her adeptness at handling potentially loaded questions from self-important bloviators will give the slightest sliver of a glimpse of her skill at working in a room in which people may come to ideological loggerheads at any time.
Pop some popcorn, open a cold one, silently weep at the realization you have nothing better to do, and let the partisan hackery begin!
