John Edward’s painfully protracted game of footsie with Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama continued over the weekend, as Edwards and Obama held a not-secret-enough meeting in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Edwards was thought to have been close to genuflecting before the alter of Clinton’s power (and may still be, at that), but Obama’s recent string of unequivocal victories on Mark Penn’s list of states that don’t matter was enough for the onetime challenger to give the almost-a-frontrunner a strong, even mildly desperate, embrace.
So what happened? Obama on their rendezvous:
“We were exchanging views, he was giving me some thoughts, and obviously he’s gonna be a big force in the Democratic party for many years to come.”
Sure. Views. It doesn’t appear an Edwards endorsement is immanent, at least for the new kid’s camp, as Obama campaign was decidedly nonspecific about whether the former Senator might be hitching his wagon to their star.
Regardless of who he chooses, John Edwards’ dilly-dallying has gone on for long enough. He dropped out of the race on January 30, three full political realities ago. If he doesn’t take a side or come to the decision it’s better not to endorse soon, he’s going to make Fred Thompson look like a man of action.
