Without notice, Re:Generator’s fourth bloggiversary shuffled past on July 7th. Four doesn’t carry the same weight as five or ten years, but 1461 days is a goodly amount of time to dedicate to any project. We’ve gone through changes, for better and worse, produced work that has made us proud and things we wished we’d never written.
Some posts, to our surprise, are still relevant today (My favorite from that first month is entitled “What women want …is for Mel Gibson to stop hating Jews”. Entitlement and racism are timeless.)
Re:Generator started with me and will probably end with me. Most of our talented writers are now doing other things. At least one may save your life down the line – here’s looking at you, Dr. rex opolis – and others grew tired, bored or annoyed and moved on. I’ve felt all of the above at varying points. Economic considerations have prevented me from being the hands-on editor I was able to be in, say, 2008. Ambition, meet reality.
I’ve been dwelling on what is to be done with Re:Generator. It’s never turned a profit, it can feel like a burden (and when it does, I think it shows), and it’s hardly the most popular site on the web. Still, I like it. I like the freedom it offers, even if I rarely have the time or energy to explore what that freedom means.
We won’t go on forever, but I think it has at least another year in it. Maybe more. Maybe we’ll be something different. and maybe I’ll win the Oregon lottery and be able to pay writers (right after I pay for an expensive operation that places my brain in a better-looking, more physically graceful cyborg body). I hear it worked well for Mitt Romney.
