Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is the walking dead. Gonzales was deeply involved in the politically-motivated firings of insufficiently Bush-loyal U.S. attorneys, and as the evidence mounted, he tried to recuse himself by casting himself as detached and incompetent. That’s an all-around piss-poor idea. If you’re fighting to keep your job, you don’t want Congress’ only choices to be “corrupt” or “incompetent.”
I see no dichotomy. Based on his behavior, I’d say it’s both.
After his sworn testimony in today’s Senate hearing, the death knell has been sounded. He contradicted himself, he argued with senators, and they, in turn, have washed their hands of him.
“The best way to put this behind us is your resignation,” Sen. Tom Coburn bluntly told Gonzales, one GOP conservative to another.
Time to pack up your office, Gonzo…
