John Edwards is giving up the ghost.
If only it had been Elizabeth Edwards running instead of her husband. If only her cancer hadn’t returned. If only the cost of haircuts hadn’t become a campaign issue. If only his anti-corporate message hadn’t limited the coverage of his campaign. If only he had bought every vote like Mitt Romney. If only he hadn’t had to compete against Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. If only he’d received more credit for driving the other Democratic hopefuls to the left by example. If only it was easier to buy a message of economic populism from a rich trial lawyer. If only he didn’t sound so Southern. If only he’d been able to sweep South Carolina. If only his message of “two Americas” didn’t sound so negative.
