Above is one of the internet’s recently popular viral videos, “David after dentist”, a funny video of a little kid high on life and anesthetics, possibly laughing gas, or all of the above. The point is, the boy’s father thought it was cute enough to record and put on Youtube so millions of strangers can laugh at David as he says things like, “Is this real life?” and questions the number of fingers he has.
It’s not cruel in any way, except for future-David who will be greatly embarrassed as a teen when he sees the video again. This situation would happen to anyone, at any age, at any time. Mr. Devore just happened to have a camera handy and decided to record.
But like all things that are fun, there is always someone to piss all over it. That someone is Bill O’Reilly, naturally. Nothing seems to be safe from the likes of Bill-O the Clown. He thinks that the father of David, also a David with the last name Devore, was exploiting his child and had the father on his show to talk about it. Somehow sharing a part of every kid’s life on the internet is exploitation, even though he wasn’t making any money from it (in the beginning anyway, but after it became popular there are now t-shirts) and it wasn’t harming the child at all. Nevertheless, O’Reilly claims the video as “disturbing” and that it’s “not good for him” (young David), though one would think not feeling any pain would be great for a child, O’Reilly didn’t think so.
It’s almost hard to believe how serious Bill O’Reilly takes this video, a video that thousands of people have seen, parents and non-parents alike, and find it amusing and not dangerous. Bill O’Reilly shows his age by not understanding the internet and the reason that Youtube exists. He calls it exploitation and voyeurism, everyone else calls it life. It’s not even voyeurism, Bill O’Reilly uses that word; I do not think it means what he thinks it means.
