The Texan Republican Party has unzipped their flies and shown us the embarrassment of their heritage with their 2010 party platform. It’s obvious that they not only haven’t gotten over the civil war (still) by the predominance of Confederate flags, but they’re still whinging about Lawrence v. Texas by bringing up sodomy laws once again. But not only are they proposing to punish homosexuals for their “icky” lifestyles, but any heteros who support gay rights are also in trouble of being charged for a felony and possibly jailed.
By “support”, it’s mainly those who officiate a same-sex marriage and issue the marriage license. But who’s to say that any witnesses to the wedding/marriage wouldn’t be fined or jailed as well?
These people need to stop for a second and really think about what it is they are asking for. What are the real reasons behind all of this; are they even sound? No, of course they aren’t. What sense does it make to punish someone who is not only doing their job, but also expressing their constitutional rights by supporting something they agree with? What sense does it make to punish someone for engaging in a sex act, gay or straight, even if it’s in the privacy of their own bedrooms?
I think someone conveniently glossed over the 25-year study that concluded children of lesbian parents are psychologically more well-adjusted, which results in fewer behavioral problems. Which is pretty good evidence in the case against the claim that homosexuals are “tearing at the fabric of society and contributing to the breakdown of the family unit”, as the republican platform states.
So what is the real threat here, I wonder? That teh gays will help our children become more tolerant and accepting? Oh no, they must be stopped!
