Deepwater Horizon is the biggest oil spill ever. In the history of the universe. In all of time, including the future. That will probably be due to our descendants giving up fossil fuels because the Earth’s reserves ran so low running machinery on them was no longer tenable, but still. Really, can anyone deny this with their cold, hard science facts?
More oil is spilled from the [Niger] delta’s network of terminals, pipes, pumping stations and oil platforms every year than has been lost in the Gulf of Mexico … That disaster, which claimed the lives of 11 rig workers, has made headlines round the world. By contrast, little information has emerged about the damage inflicted on the Niger delta. Yet the destruction there provides us with a far more accurate picture of the price we have to pay for drilling oil today.
The Guardian forgets the cardinal rules pertaining to caring or even paying attention to human tragedy: 1) America is the center of the universe, and 2) It doesn’t count if it’s in Africa. If something happens outside the United States we can be expected not care, and if it happens in Africa, we can be expected not to notice.
