The unassuming and good looking young American to your left is Constance McMillen, from Jackson, MISS. Her school hates her because she caused the school board to cancel the senior prom at her high school. What heinous crime did she commit that made the school react so hastily? She invited her girlfriend to be her prom date. Oh, and she wanted to wear a tux. That’s about it. I’m going to let that sink into your mind for a second.
So. An entire school’s junior-senior prom was canceled because one girl wanted to wear something that made her comfortable and escort her girlfriend as her date to the dance. They weren’t threatening to bomb the place, or spike the punch, or play a prank. They were going to do exactly what everyone else was going to do and bring a date to prom and enjoy themselves. I know, right?
Before I forget, I must point out that it is school policy to only bring a date of the opposite sex and because Constance didn’t follow this policy the entire prom was canceled. Also because she was going to wear a tuxedo and not a dress like womenfolk are supposed to wear.
At least the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) knows this is unfair and unconstitutional, but that doesn’t mean the school board is going to listen, let alone acknowledge a teenager as a person who has individual rights. Why would they?
Well, perhaps this school board will be singing a different tune now that the ACLU is filing a suit against the school and its principal in the name of Constance McMillen and anyone else who wants to express themselves without shame. Hopefully things will be rectified in time for the prom to be reinstated by its original date of April 2nd.
