The Ratchet & Clank panel was the final panel I visited on my adventure at Comic-Con.
The series has always been a staple for Sony and the Playstation console. The latest addition, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, looks to be as much a success as it’s hilarious predecessors.
All the great platform characteristics, like some of the all-stars in weapons, and the traditional Ratchet-blows-stuff-up pattern, are continuing. Some new changes are also in store.
Now we’ll have the option to make our own weapons. During the game we’ll find pieces that we can add to our weapon, giving it a different range or special effect. There are different types of ammunition, like lasers, fire, or acidic blob types that stick to baddies like napalm. Players can also give their weapons a new paint job, allowing us to match our artillery with the coming spring fashion. Fabulous.
The game centers on Ratchet and Clank who, seperated from each other, must follow two different story lines. An interesting theme in Clank’s view of the story is time. Trapped in a mysterious fortress in the middle of the universe, he acquires a weapon that allows him to record himself doing an action, like stepping on a button. Once the recorded Clank steps on the button a door will open, and the real Clank can now move on to the next room. Of course as the levels progress, the timing of the recorded Clanks needs to become more precise in order to continue. In essence, Clank’s part of the story is more of a puzzle, while Ratchet still holds the blow-stuff-up part of the story.
A fan’s question brought up the concern about the presence of Easter eggs, and other forms of content that were not in line with the linear game play, and the panel announced the return of the Insomniac Museum.
All in all, the game looks awesome. The graphics are as superb as they’ve always been, the innovations are cleverer than the last game, and the humor is as on point. I foresee a lot of money in the future for Insomniac Games.
