Didn’t like the shit show that was the last Spiderman movie? Not to worry. Much like comic books themselves, films based on comic books, in particular the big money properties, place no value on the permanence on a plot point or a writer’s vision. With plans announced to reboot the Spiderman franchise free of Raimi, Maguire, et al, the brevity of the cycle between relaunches also mirrors its ink and paper counterparts. For graphically illustrated magazines published monthly like Marvel, ten years is a long time. In terms of filmmaking, the dust from Spiderman 3 is still settling, the horror of an guyliner-clad Peter Parker still fresh in audiences minds. It will be interesting to see if moviegoers are ready to invest – emotionally and financially – in more tales of the friendly neighborhood Spiderman, or whether a reboot on the tail of the last film will hit theaters with the same dull thud as a new Hulk iteration.
