Comic Book prices are skyrocketing. This is a problem for Re:Generator as the core staff has a penchant for penny dreadfuls, and even though they can barely afford booze and illicit drugs, never miss the opportunity to pick up a few funny books. Heather Massey at tor.com is worried, though:
Somehow though, this jump just seems flagrantly wrong. For one, it appears to be vastly exceeding the rate of inflation. Plus, we’re talking about comics, something historically perceived as inexpensive.
The question I’d like to put out there, is where is all this money going? I can understand most industries have increased costs for raw materials and transportation, and that our dollar has fallen sharply recently. I’m going to be bold though, and drop this squarely on the shoulders of the executives at Comic Book, Inc. Pick you favorite, it doesn’t matter to me. Something tells me that ridiculous salaries, bonuses and wasteful business practices have more to do with this than our current economic climate. Call me nutty, but promoting summer blockbusters probably costs a penny or two. I’m sure branching out into action figures, lunchboxes, television shows, blankets with sleeves, etc. had no effect on your business model. I’m sure lackluster use of the internet years and years late to the party had no effect on you.
I’m no expert. In fact, I’m extremely biased. I’d love to get my hands on some cheap comics. I’m out there on Free Comic Book day to get my one free comic even though I’ve bought tons all year. I’m even willing to pay the increased prices for comics. It’s my prerogative to bitch. What I’m saying here is no blaming this one on the economy.
