After the “success” of Transformers it seems like everyone is rushing to make classic anime series into live-action movies. First Voltron got the green light, brought to you by the same company producing a live action/computer generated Alvin and the Chipmunks as well as yet another Eddie Murphy sci-fi flick Starship Dave. That sounds about as appealing as getting herpes in your eyes. Recent news suggests that Tobey Macguire has nabbed the rights to and plans to produce as well as star in a live action version of the classic Robotech (known as Macross if you aren’t lame or from the east).
Robotech(Macross) tells the story of a global confilct that has all but decimated the population and natural resources of the world. At the peak of this conflict an alien spacecraft appears above the earth and crash lands into Macross Island in the South Pacific. All nations declare peace and an international communtity is built around this crashed ship in order to study it secrets. The technological secrets of the Macross spacecraft lead humanity to a new era of peace and prosperity and the world community is able to repair the alien spacecraft, as well as develop giant robots capable of transforming into jets and flying through space. On the day of the maiden voyage of the newly repaired and renamed Super Defense Fortress-1 (or SDF-1) the earth and Macross Island is attacked by the giagantic alien race the Zentradi, who are seeking the space craft.
I think it’s safe to say I know a thing or two about this series. Tobey, do me proud.
