…And it doesn’t sound too happy. In fact, it’s roaring. Astronomers attempting to measure faint signs of heat from the universe’s earliest stars found instead a booming roar unlike any they’ve ever heard before. Science cannot yet offer an explanation for such an unusual sound. While galaxies do emit radio waves that produce a static hiss, Dale Fixsen, from the University of Maryland, explains that in order for galaxies to be the cause of the roar,
You’d have to pack them into the universe like sardines. There wouldn’t be any space left between one galaxy and the next.”
It seems that space is always giving astronomers something new to ponder: The universe is speeding up rather than slowing down. Dark energy seems to make up 2/3 of the cosmos, but no one knows what it is. And now space is producing a roar of epic proportions.
One thing’s certain–if you’re looking for a career path, astronomy seems to be a wise choice. Our universe is still full of enough WTFs to keep scientists busy for years to come.
