There’s the saying that kids will be kids, but it appears that people don’t really understand what that means. Kids will be kids can be suffixed with any number of actions or words or sayings that kids usually spout without thinking, not knowing about common courtesy or what being polite really entails.
In those instances, a dictionary may help kids to know exactly what “polite” means and how to be so, but if you’re a child in Southern California you may not even have a dictionary in school anymore if the school board goes through with making a temporary ban on Merriam-Webster dictionaries permanent. It’s ridiculous to think of a dictionary as being an offensive piece of literature, but some parents are such pansies that even the smallest thing will set them off.
One such parent demanded the dictionaries be removed from schools because their child was so brazen as to look up the definition of “oral sex.” Seriously. I’m trying to wrap my head around this but it’s really difficult. If you can’t understand why this is a ridiculous move then perhaps you should look up “idiotic” in the dictionary, or a thesaurus if you’re really privileged.
