An exciting new Wachowski project is underway, and it’s got a heavy theme.
The film, titled ‘CN9,’ is set in the near future and centers around a United States soldier fighting in the Iraq War. In a flash to the present day, we follow the story as the soldier develops a romantic – and homosexual – relationship with an Iraqi citizen.
The idea that the Wachowskis would make a film with a gay theme may not seem so outrageous. After all, Lana Wachowski, formerly Larry Wachowski, is openly transgender. Furthermore, gay films come out all the time (pardon the pun), so some may not see this a big deal.
To those folks I would say that I normally agree, except that in this case the Wachowskis are hitting on several subjects at once: the struggle with masculinity and femininity in the gay community, Capulet/Montague style conflict between cultures, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in the military, and of course the war itself. This film could do a lot of good in terms of equality and exposure and I will certainly be keeping an eye on its progression.
