In the spirit of election day, and to contrast the documentary I posted over the weekend, I thought I would share a film about John Kerry’s 2004 presidential campaign called Inside the Bubble. Unlike the 1992 campaign run by George Stephanopolis and James Carville to elect Bill Clinton, the Kerry campaign is shown struggling both before and after the election.
Watching the documentary you might find, as I did, Kerry’s campaign to be predictable and inept. It’s a stark contrast to the early stages of the campaign run during that year’s Democratic primaries by the now head of the DNC Howard Dean. Dean’s world-famous scream ultimately lead to his defeat, but his emphasis on the grassroots of the party and ambitious 50-state strategy is now at least partially vindicated by Barack Obama’s potential for stunning victories in traditional Republican strongholds.
