Let’s ask ourselves a few questions about 2009’s Game of the Year, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Is it fun?
Fuck yeah, it is – and it will be for a very long time. This game is playable by a very large audience. I include myself, and I fucking hate first person shooters. Modern Warfare 2 (MW2 for future reference, for those of you who aren’t down with the slang game and still need abbreviation explanations) is fun for everyone. I love that stupid snowmobile part. I can do that for hours, and have. I can get better as a player because of the way the game’s multiplayer mechanic hooks you up with people on your skill level. The game’s designers obviously wanted players to have fun, the game wants you to become a better player, and it wants you to make friends and interact with others who are like you.

Without multiplayer, is it still a good game?
MW2’s visuals and attention to detail alone are noteworthy. Playing it not only puts you IN the game, it puts you in the experience of the game. The campaign might not be as good as the multiplayer, but that’s because the multiplayer is pretty much as good as it gets (Except for when those fuckers never stop camping on you, or when someone jacks your helicopter.). If taken out of the equation, the campaign is still a good game. But, since multiplayer functions have become more of a staple than an option in war games (and really games in general), you can’t really take it out of the equation anyway.

Is there long-term value in the game?
Because of the multiplayer community, MW2 will never die… at least not until a new one comes out. If you finish the campaign there are still different skill options, there are a ton of achievements that you can unlock, and there will always be n00bs to p0wn. Then they include parts like the snowmobile as a minigame, which can be played over and over and over because they are fun, addictive, and everyone can play them no matter their interest in games in general. The game comes on all major platforms, and performs well on all of them. It’s not like they just knocked out the PC version in a few weeks, or likewise the XBox 360 or PS3. Modern Warfare 2* is worth every penny.
*The last mention of the games title was written in full for one reason: literary effect.
