Mass Effect
Published by Microsoft
Developed by BioWare
Available for XBox 360 November 20th, 2007

BioWare and Microsoft have teamed up to bring you kids one hell of a space opera in their new game Mass Effect. A sprawling and shockingly beautiful new RPG for the XBox360, Mass Effect puts you in the role of Captain Shepard and sends you off on an adventure that crosses the galaxy. Unlike many games in the genre, Mass Effect employs a system where your dialog and actions have direct results on how the story plays out. Every problem has more than one solution and each individual’s play style will have broad effects on the game.

Combat in Mass Effect is as open as the rest of the game. You can run around the battle issuing short commands to your squad similar to squad-based shooters on the market today, or you can use a more turn-based style of combat that is signature to most of the BioWare developed RPGs. Even if you prefer turn-based RPG style combat, you’ll find yourself utilizing cover and the environment around you to protect you in major battles.

Mass Effect is full of great RPG standards presented in ingenious ways. Creating your character is actually rebuilding his ‘entry’ in the galactic database. Each conversation will present you with branching choices of responses that can change the story radically. After the initial hour or so of introduction, you’re free to roam the galaxy and journey through the ambitious story on your own terms, without those pesky RPG training wheels.
Pick up Mass Effect tomorrow wherever it is you like to purchase video games.
